The trim patch is a novel estrogen-progestogen patch, combining the benefits of a transdermal formulation with those of a new generation pure progestin, trimegestone.

Transdermal estrogens avoid the negative thrombo-embolic effects of oral estrogens, most likely by avoiding hepatic first-pass metabolism and by providing steady estrogen levels without the peaks and troughs seen with oral therapy.

Trimegestone has one of the highest progesterone-androgen ratios compared to existing progestins and an absence of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid activity. The combination of a potent, selective progestin with a transdermal delivery system offers the prospect of a product with a safety margin exceeding currently available products.

Potential indications include HRT as well as contraception.

The patch technology used is the state-of-the-art Lohmann Therapie-Systeme (LTS) patch technology. This patch has excellent technical properties (e.g. adhesiveness and tolerability) together with an appealing cosmetic aspect and shows absolute dose proportionality (patch size - plasma concentrations) providing flexible development options.

The patch is ready to enter pivotal phase IIb clinical studies for HRT and is available for licensing.
