Anti-emetic
Using its established expertise, ProStrakan is
developing a transdermal patch which delivers an anti-emetic drug straight into
the bloodstream without the need for injection or oral administration. The
application of a single small patch to the skin could do away with the need for
repeated injections and/or tablets over a three to five day period, potentially
increasing compliance and greatly aiding patients.
5HT3 antagonists are also of great utility in the prevention of radiotherapy induced nausea and vomiting and are used to prevent post operative emesis caused by many anaesthetic regimens (Physicians Desk Reference, 2005). The current global market size for these types of anti-emetics is estimated at over $2 billion per annum (IMS Health).
